Euro 2021: All Change

All change for Scotland, England, Czech Republic and Croatia football federations.

Just over one week ago the Czech Republic football team were due to move into their pre Euro 2021training camp at Scotland’s High Performance Centre at Oriam, Edinburgh. This meant that Scotland decamped to Rockliffe Park, the home of Middlesbrough FC.

But last week the Czech Republic announced that they were unhappy with Scotland’s Covid-19 rules so are now staying in their homeland. In a statement they said; "The Czech national team will spend the whole Uefa Euro 2020 tournament in Prague instead of the basecamp in Edinburgh as it was planned originally.

“It's all due to the Covid-19 restrictions and rules in Scotland. One positively tested member of the team would mean quarantine for the whole team as Scotland's restrictions say right now."

The Czechs suggest Scotland's rules conflict with "UEFA return to play protocols".

A few days ago, Croatia followed suite by announcing they would not be taking their places at University of St Andrews Sports Centre. Their Executive director Marijan Kustic said it could not risk "the whole team being sent into self-isolation" and followed a recommendation from UEFA to change the location of its base camp.

Head coach Zlatko Dalic and his squad will instead remain in Rovinj, where they have already been training at NK Rovinj Stadium. "Choosing any other international option for our team camp this close to the Euros would have been pure improvisation," Kustic said.

"We acted responsibly and we found a quick solution for our team in these exceptionally difficult circumstances. We couldn't allow ourselves to place the whole team in danger of being sent into self-isolation by travelling to St Andrews.”

Dalic added; "This is the best outcome we could reach in these strange times and we now have a unique opportunity to spend this tournament in our own country.”

The 2 departures has meant that Scotland FC have returned to their National Training base in Oriam, Edinburgh and England FA have moved into Rockliffe Park.
