England Women football training in La Manga

England Women football training in La Manga

England got off to a flying start at the Cyprus Cup with a 2 – 0 victory over Italy. This was Mark Sampson’s first tournament match in charge of England’s Womens team and he was pleased with a completely dominant performance.

Sampson made two changes for this match following his team’s 1 – 1 draw against Norway at the La Manga Club training facilities in January.

England were at La Manga between January 12th & 18th, making the most of the warm climate and the many advantages offered by the Murcia based resort. Training was good natured and allowed Sampson to spend time with the squad on the practice field and also in the “classroom”. Sampson kept with tradition as the group of 30 players embarked on their game of “piggy in the middle”. For other sessions the group were split according to their field positions.

The training camp was the start of a busy three month period for the England team. Speaking to Murcia Today, Sampson explained that he had “got lots of new faces in the squad and that gives me a good opportunity to see where we are at and will help me make some decisions as we move forward.

It is a training camp, it’s important to emphasise that. The door is fully open for every player”.

La Manga attracts International Football teams across the age groups. The winter break also saw Barcelona join the likes of Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund training here, a sign of La Manga’s popularity with top flight professional clubs.
