Scotland are more relaxed about where people can swim outdoors. Swimmers are seen in rivers and lakes, and there are plenty of the latter.

Loch Venacher, home of the last two Scottish Gas National Open Water Championships. The Loch is on the eastern edge of the Trossachs National Park, and about 5 km west of Callander. The Loch is also home to Loch Venacher Sailing Club.

Loch Lomond, also in the Trossachs National Park is the home of the Great Scottish Swim. Keri-Anne Payne, Olympic silver medallist competed here in 2013 and the loch is used by Glasgow Triathlon Club.

Further north Loch Park about 5 km north east of Dufftoan and the Glenfiddich Distillery is used by the Moray Firth Triathlon Club.

Scot Mountain Holidays use Loch Morlich about 10 km south east of Aviemore, in the Glenmore Forest Park

Scotland is a great destination for both MTB and Road cycling and offers you the opportunity to do some alternative training. Changing from one to the other for a training camp will refresh your training and introduce you to new bike handling skills.

Spanning Southern Scotland there are the 7 Stanes MTB Trails. These are seven MTB trail centres offering bike shops, bike hire, bike tuition & guiding and accommodation. The centres are at Glentrool, Kirroughtree (reputed to have the best singletrack in the country), Dalbeattie, Mabie, Ae, Glentress and Newcastleton.

The Forestry Commission have a grading system split between those for cross-country singletrack trails and those for extreme trails and forest roads.

You can find Scotland’s Mountain Bike Community at Trail Scotland, for general information and forums. They also have a Strava link, good selection of trails and bike friendly accommodation.

If you’re looking for guides, skill courses to improve your bike handling and alternative outdoor centres, Developing MTB Scotland offer a wide selection.
