Summary

Introduction

The High Altitude Training Centre (HATC) is located on the outskirts of Iten in the Rift Valley province, Kenya. Iten is 2,400metres above sea level, 35km north east of Eldoret and 350 km north of Nairobi.

HATC is open to anyone from recreational to Olympic level and runners, mountain bikers, triathletes and sports tourists are all welcomed.

The centre is operational all year round. The rainy season is usually April/May and August/September but recently the centre has operated during these months without interruption. The temperatures throughout the year remain between 20°C - 28°C.'

The Beginning

Iten was the home of Irish Patrician Brother, Colm O'Connell who worked at the local St. Patricks High School. Finding that many of his pupils had a talent for running he began organising running camps.

Iten became the home of the Kenyan middle and long distance runners such as Wilson Kipsang (former world record holder for the marathon and London marathon champion), Abel Kirui (2x world champion, marathon), David Rudisha (world record holder and Olympic champion 800m), Florence Kiplagat (world record holder, half marathon), Edna Kiplagat (2x world champion, marathon), Mary Keitany (world champion for half marathon, winner London marathon), Asbel Kiprop (Olympic champion 1500m).

The Founder

HATC was founded by 4 times World Champion, Lornah Kiplaget in 2000. Lornah competed for the Netherlands in 3 consecutive Olympic Games, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Training Facilities

Running

There are miles of dirt roads available leading directly from the centre. There is also a near-by 400 metre track.

The dirt roads are a welcome respite to injury-prone legs, are great for low impact sessions or shorter recovery runs. Although Iten is in the Rift Valley, there are no mountains to contend with. The terrain is mainly undulating with some small hills and longer, more challenging slopes.

Mountain Biking

Routes are available from the centre, many of which will take you through the breathing taking scenery of the Rift Valley and beyond. Alternatively, you will be able to use MTB specific training courses.

Swimming

There is a 25m heated outdoor pool which can be used for both recreation and training.

Aqua-jogging belts and floats are available for use.

The swimming pool is free to use for all guests staying at HATC. Visitors can pay a small daily fee to use the pool.

Gym

The gym is stocked with weight machines and free weights, cross trainers, static bikes and ample floor space for core stability exercises and stretching.

On Site Clinic

Physiotherapy;
The in-house physiotherapists have all been trained by the well-known Physical Therapist, Gerard Hartman. Treatment rooms can be hired if you are travelling with your own physiotherapist.

The on-site clinic also offers sports massages and has two saunas.

There is a local hospital and HATC have good contacts with several hospitals in Eldoret. Please check what vaccinations are necessary before you travel.

Coaching

In House Coaching

The club coach will help you with training advice and a training schedule, no matter your level, at an additional charge, depending upon your needs. HATC can also arrange for local athletes to act as pace makers or guides.

The HATC gym instructors run 3 Core Stability, Strengthening and Stretching sessions a week. These are free to attend for HATC guests.
