Annecy is in the north of the French Alps and is called the "Venice of Savoie". The medieval town centre built around a 14th century chateau is dissected by small canals and streams running out of Lac Annecy which is clean, fresh and a wonderful azure colour.

The lake is 14 km long and the 2000m course runs parallel with the north shore line, along the southern edge of the town.

The 2013 Tour de France stage 20 started in Annecy and finished at Annecy Semnoz at 1655m

Annecy bid to host the 2018 Olympic Games but lost to Pyeongchang.

Annecy is one of the most popular towns in the Alps.

- The Palais de l'Ile (or the "old prison"), was built in 1132. It has been a court house, a mint and a has twice been a jail, once in the Middle Ages and the other during WWII. It is the symbol of the town and is among the most photographed monuments in all of France

The Château d'Annecy (Annecy Castle) was the home of the Counts of Geneva. In the 16th century the castle entrance was fortified with a parapet walkway.

The Cathedral of Saint-Pierre built in the 16th century was the cathedral of François de Sales, and is home to a number of artworks and baroque pieces from the 19th century
