Coaching

  • Rob is a British Cycling Level 3 Road and Time Trial coach who focuses on quality and likes to spend time with people to understand their needs and aspirations as opposed to a cookie cutter approach.

Rob Hawkins, founder of Colconquerors, talks exclusively to Which Training Camp about where Colconquerors are headed in the future.

    Bike Fitting

Being comfortable on the bike and having a position that is sustainable for your chosen type of riding is critical if you’re to have efficient movements that allow you to generate power and speed. Having a bike that fits to you correctly will help you perform better, enhance your bike handling skills and ultimately allow you and your bike to work together.

Trained by Cyclefit, the team responsible for fitting the Pro team at Trek Factory Racing, Colconquerors have the latest knowledge backed up by investment in the best bike fitting equipment currently available. Of course there is also the advantage of having ridden with you  and understand your riding style. There will normally be rides post fit so the Colconqueror team will be on hand for follow-up advice and small road side tweaks.

    Cycling Dates

The camps are designed to be challenging and time on the bike will vary between five and six hours a day. On certain days the mini bus left at the base of the final climb or other strategic position to ensure there’s always a get out clause if you’d like to save yourself for the following day.

Comments:  Sitting at the airport fresh from a superb week with Rob and Karen of ColConquerors. Having found the company on google and read their terrific reviews I was impressed from the first contact. The communication pre departure was swift, concise and welcoming. On arrival I had clear direction on transport arrangements - an individual transfer with Karen which made for a great start to the week. The hotel accommodation in Gran Canaria was first class with excellent room and hotel facilities and an enormous choice and freshness at the inclusive breakfast and dinner. Located in a quieter resort it makes for a relaxing break and there is a lovely marina and beach to explore during the rest day. The thoroughness of Rob’s approach to the entire experience is evident at every stage. The riding was varied, challenging and thoroughly enjoyable...even the Valley of the Tears! Again Rob and Karen excel at providing a product which meets every requirement of the variety of guests they look after. Their complete support throughout the week coupled with a flexible approach and willingness to adapt makes for truly tailored week. This was my first experience of this type of holiday. Having not ridden a whole week before nor attempted the kind of challenge the roads of Gran Canaria present it was as part of a great group of like minded individuals that I had such and enjoyable time. I hired a bike locally and was impressed by receiving a brand new 2018 bike at a very reasonable price. A slight technical niggle on the first day and the bike was replaced by the hire company immediately with their apologies. A 1st class service. I would wholeheartedly recommend ColConquerors to anyone considering this type of holiday. The vast number of return customers speaks for itself! Hoping to be back soon, next time for a trip to the Alps!

Comments:  We first found Col Conquerors in a cycling magazine, then went online to look into their trips in more detail. Unlike other companies their website was really up to date, thorough and informative. And that is typical of everything they do. Rob, Karen and Mike work tirelessly to ensure that their guests have a great holiday. Our hotel in Bormio was fantastic, and that is no accident as Rob selects their hotels through meticulous online research, direct contact with the owners, then staying a few days there. The hotel was super-comfortable and friendly, and brilliantly set up for cyclists with a big and secure bike room, lots of tools, and a sauna for post-ride relaxation. The food was brilliant too and there was lots of it, so plenty to power us up all those hills. As a vegetarian, I'm happy to be flexible / miss out a course here and there if there isn't a veggie option, but Rob and the hotel staff wouldn't stand for that! They made sure there was always something delicious for me to eat. In fact, on most occasions I even had choices, and once the hotel staff just let me choose whatever I'd like to have for my main course and said they'd make it for me! During our trip the weather was much colder than usual for September. Rob kept a hawk eye on the weather at all times, spending a lot of time in the evenings and early mornings checking all sorts of forecasts so he could plan our schedule around it. In this way he made sure that we were able to do most of the planned rides, but we avoided potentially hazardous situations in fresh snow and ice at the top of the high mountain passes and were able to get home safely each evening. It was also amazing having the support van with us at all times as it meant that we could change into full winter gear for descending. Finally, I think the thing which really sets Col Conquerors apart, is Rob's vast amount of knowledge and experience about, and love of, everything cycling-related. He is a trained bike-fitter and a coach, so he spent lots of time watching us cycling and advising us on changes to bikes and kit, training, diet etc (including female-specific info) which could help us avoid injuries, get faster, and/or get more out of our cycling. Col Conquerors is able to cater for all types of cyclist, fast and slow, to make sure that everyone has a great time. Rob makes sure that everyone sticks together where necessary (eg. to get through tricky town sections), then knows where they're going and where to meet up etc (with a very thorough daily guide with pictures and route descriptions, briefings and GPX files) and feels fully supported along the way (particularly with Rob and Mike riding with us, and Karen following in the van making sure everyone's ok), so you can ride at your own speed in the mountains, get the most out of it, and have a brilliant time! Thank you so much to Rob, Karen and Mike! We will definitely be back next year!

Comments:  Just came back from a week away in the Italian Aples with Col Conquerors and had the most incredible time. I went by myself not knowing anyone, but because the group was small (11 of us in total) it was great. Everyone was out to have fun and we all got along great. The time and effort taken by Rob and the team into researching hotels and the area really paid off. The hotel was incredible. The food every night was fresh with a wide selection to choose from. The staff were incredibly friendly and there was a full wash service so can get your favourite kit cleaned before your ride the next day. There was a fully equipped secure bike room with all the tools and rigs you could need. So no need to worry if you forgot something at home (even though Rob pretty much had everything also). The rides were very well planned out. Let me just say, they are no walk in the park. They were all challenging, but if you are up for it you will have a great time. Every ride is a full day out on the bike, with the obligatory coffee stops and lunch along the way. There was no issue with the pace you wanted to ride at. You can ride as fast or as slow as you want. No one got upset. Support on the rides were done by both Rob and his wife Karen, as well as Mike (a demon on the bike). Rob and Mike rode with us, motivating us along the long climbs and making sure we knew where to go and what to do. Karen drove the van, stopping along the rides taking pics and keeping all our bags with all our extra gear, nutrition and water should we need. She was incredible. They all were, and made it without a shadow of a doubt the best week on the bike I have ever had and an experience I will never forget. Thank you Rob, Karen and Mike. I hope to ride with you guys again soon.

Comments:  Just returned from an amazing three days in the Alps with Colconquerors. Without a shadow of a doubt this was the best three days I've ever spent on (and off) a bike. Rob, Karen, Becky & Sam are great company and superb hosts. The chalet was great and the food was simply astonishing - plentiful, healthy & extremely tasty. I came with a desire to climb Alpe D'Huez and the Col de la Madeleine and Rob made sure these were included in the routes, but also applied his extensive local knowledge to introduce some stunning climbs that I knew nothing about and select the best café stops along the way. The rides were just what I wanted - challenging but great fun and always in stunning scenery. They were also very well supported, with Rob riding alongside us and a support vehicle never far away - full of extra kit and food and available as a broom wagon for those who had taken their fill of climbing. Rob's cycling knowledge is superb and I learnt a lot of training, nutrition and recovery tips from him that I am determined to apply to my cycling going forward. I highly recommend Colconquerors and intend to return many more times over the next few years.

Comments:  Just returned from an awesome week of high-altitude training in Gran Canaria with Col Conquerors. I have to say it was probably the best week I have spent on the bike in years. Great company from friends accompanied by hour upon hour of expert guidance, tuition, encouragement, support and plentiful nuggets of cycling goodness from the expert coach that is Rob Hawkins, the mastermind behind Col Conquerors. Erudite, knowledgeable and quick with a cycling anecdote, qualified level 3 coach Rob made the week very special with his carefully planned routes, structured progress and meal-time banter. Talk of power, FTP, training zones and the like over dinner were fascinating, and when put into practice the progress made over just a week was quite incredible. Would I go back? Absolutely - in a (quite high) heartbeat. Thank you Rob and Karen for a truly memorable and valuable week.

Comments:  Great location, great service, excellent local knowledge, great food designed for hungry cyclists, combined with a super friendly team. Nothing was too much trouble for my first Marmotte back in July. After BA lost my bike Rob took control, had a couple of hire bikes at his place when I arrived, fitted one for me, and ensured the stress of the previous 3 days evaporated by the time I had finished my first cup of tea on the veranda. The preparation Rob puts into his trips is second to none and made riding the Marmotte so much smoother than I imagined. From riding the main mountains in advance, to the hidden water stops that allow you to beat the crowds, to the feed station on the telegraph. It’s the little details that make all the difference. Can’t wait to return

Comments:  Completed the Marmotte last year with Rob and Karen; the food and organisation were excellent and the hospitality better. Rob takes and insightful long term view of his clients offering real encouragement and help. The rides and the scenery were breathtaking. Respect to all of my fellow London Dynamo’s who finished the event and I hope to join your ranks next year. This year in 45 degrees Celsius and the exceptionally hard route finishing is real achievement. I would, without question, recommend Colconquerors to anyone and the Alps; I’ve cycled many regions in Europe but the High Alps are unsurpassed!

Comments:  Many thanks to Rob and Karen for a great stay and riding programme leading up to a successful completion of this year’s Marmotte. In a fit of misguided enthusiasm I and a group of fellow London Dynamos entered what was for all of us a first Marmotte and for some of us (me included) our first ever continental European sportive. Luckily we chose to do this through Colconquerer’s Marmotte 7 night trip. As the day approached the magnitude of the challenge became increasingly apparent, but Rob’s briefings by email meant that we arrived well prepared, with all the right equipment. The training rides led by Rob in the early part of the week introduced us gradually to the delights of alpine climbs (and the excitement of the descents) up famous climbs such as the col de Telegraphe, col de Galibier and gave us a chance to ride parts of this year’s course: up the Lacets de Montvernier and the more challenging col de Mollard. They also allowed us to become acclimatised to riding at altitude and to the punishing temperatures (40C in the valleys). The day itself was very hard – the Marmotte’s reputation as one of Europe’s toughest sportives is well-deserved – made worse by the high temperatures. It seems about 1/3 of the field failed to finish; from our group of 6, only one had to bail (owing to a mid-course crash), and a large part of that was down to Rob’s sage advice on how to beat the conditions and make it to the top of Alpe d’Huez without blowing up. Overall a fantastic result. To sum up, the combination of excellent accomodation, good food and Rob’s training ensured that we all had a great time and performed to our potential. Chapeau to Rob, Karen and the team

Comments:  I've just done the High Altitude week with Rob and Colconquerors and have had an absolute blast :) Rob started the 5 of us off with a relatively easy(!) day to both give us all some confidence and also to enable him to see how capable we were, and then tailored the rest of the week accordingly. The night before Rob went through the plan for the following day, and again at breakfast before we set off so we all knew what to expect. Great attention to detail making sure of the weather and that the planned restaurant / cafe stops would be open. Great atmosphere, great humour and great cycling. And great food too. I heartily recommend Rob and Colconquerors and hope to go on anoher trip with them in the future.

Comments:  Just had a week in Gran Canaria with Colconquerors. First bumped into Rob in a cafe a couple of days before the trip officially started and by the time I'd finished my lunch my bike had had its gears completely reindexed. This set the tone for the rest of the week - nothing too much trouble and clearly the only thing that is important to Rob, Mike and Karen is that you have a fantastic time both on and off the bike. Which we did! As for Gran Canaria: 20-25 degrees every day, sunshine and beautiful scenery. Perfect as long as you like climbing hills - there isn't a lot of flat around though.

Comments:  All you have to do is cycling - Rob & team have all the rest sorted out for you! Rob is fantastic, highly knowledgeable of cycling and the local area (well a few areas!!), extremely accommodating, and every day with a smile! We've covered miles of stunning mountains: Galibier, Col d'Izoard, Alp d'Huez and more. Rob has a team to help which make the overall experience an unforgettable one. Mike is a great cyclist and incredible descender (consider yourself lucky if you can see him passing past you: I just saw blurs of colours, ahah):plenty to learn from! Back at the chalet, Becky & Karen served us great breakfasts every morning and dreamy 3-course dinners each evening. Meals are incredibly well balanced, as Rob & team know their food and what cyclists really need for such a demanding week. Fuel for our legs was spot on! I wouldn't hesitate a second to recommend Rob to all cyclists who wish to experience the Alps in total comfort and great support

Comments:  My experience with Colconquerors was a fantastic one, from the moment of booking I was supported with advice on nutrition, book recommendations to aid my knowledge and training tips. The trip itself was well organised and the plans communicated in due time. We spent a week in a chalet at the summit of Alpe D'huez with a beautiful view of the valley. Each day we cycled a different route devised by Rob to help us acclimatise and build our knowledge of the challenge (La Marmotte) to come at the end of he week, Rob and Mike would lead the rides or were on hand to support in the Colconquerors van. We all rode within our own abilities with regular checkpoints set by Rob or Mike and the atmosphere was great. Our breakfasts, Dinners and after ride recovery cakes where all cooked from scratch by Becky and Karen, with all dietary requirements taken into account (I am vegetarian, with no milk). Rob and Mike were on hand for any mechanical issues or training tips throughout the week. Following our week of training combined with recovery days, the big event of La Marmotte came. After a hearty breakfast and fully spammed up with Rob's vast knowledge of drink stops, when to eat, tips for the start etc, we set off for what was be the best day's riding of my life to end the best week of riding I've experienced. Oh and we all finished, testament to Colconquerors help and knowledge.

Comments:  Just got back from an amazing 4 days cycling, made all the more enjoyable by Rob and his team (Karen, Becky and Mike). From start to finish every element considered, great accommodation, food (thanks Becky) , advice on routes, cycling set up, training advice and excellent company / support on the rides. We didn't really have to worry about anything other than the cycling. The base is located in the heart of the hills so all the great climbs within easy reach, and both Rob and Mike excellent company on the bikes. After a hard day of climbing and descending at speed, needed new brake blocks. Rob sorted with his connections at the top of Alpe D'Huez and while I had my lunch the blocks were fitted ready for another descent. Cant ask for better service than that.... Would highly recommend Col Conquerors and already looking at booking for next year. Thanks Guys.

Comments:  Massive thanks to the brilliant Col Conquerors team - Rob, Karen, Mike and Becky. Simply the best cycling experience you're likely to get in the Alps. Rob's knowledge, advice, support and good humour is just the tonic when faced with some of the toughest cycling challenges around. The comfortable Chalet is perfectly placed in the heart of the Savoir region, surrounded by some of the greatest Alpine climbs, including l'Alpe d'Huez, the Galibier and the Col de Glandons. Karen was a charming host and her proficiency in pilates and yoga was a huge help preparing for and recovering after the rides each day. Assistant cycling coach Mike kept everyone's sprits super high and was a pleasure to ride with. And finally, chef Becky ensured we had a delicious cake ready and waiting on our return each day, and every meal she prepared was restaurant standard - I cannot fault the Col Conquerors team and cannot wait to return next year to rediscover the magic of the Alps all over again.
