Running Forever is jointly owned by well-known running expert and qualified coach Sam Murphy – author of three bestselling running books and a columnist for Runner’s World magazine – and her husband, accomplished runner and coach Jeff Pyrah.

‘Our passion is helping people to get more out of their running – not just PBs, although they can be important – but more fun, adventure and fulfilment. We want runners to create a lifetime habit,’ said Sam Murphy.

Running Forever retreats are open to runners of all levels of ability, aspiration and experience. ‘Our aim is to strike the right balance between work, rest and play, so that you end each day feeling inspired and pleasantly fatigued rather than frustrated and exhausted!’

Running Forever offers a range of services, including weekend training retreats based at large country houses and boutique hotels, one- and two-day point-to-point running adventures, guided runs, educational workshops and online bespoke coaching.

You can expect a mix of leisurely scenic runs and more targeted coached sessions alongside daily workshops on running form, practical nutrition, strength and conditioning, race preparation and recovery.

Running Forever handpicks all its retreat venues for their great location and facilities. You can expect fantastic accommodation, delicious, nutritious food (and plenty of it!) and good company (many guests travel solo). ‘Whether you’re an old hand or a relative newcomer, we promise you a great running experience while you’re with us – and a suitcase full of fresh motivation and tips to try back home.’


  • A lifelong runner and qualified coach, Jeff has a talent for identifying what is stopping a runner achieving their goals and adjusting their training regime accordingly. He can help on all aspects of running, mental and physical, to ensure you are race-ready. Jeff has an impressive running CV, having won many races, including the Beachy Head Marathon and Wendover Woods 50-mile race, and clocking a sub-2.30 marathon PB.
  • A qualified coach and well-known running expert and author, Sam has worked with everyone from beginners just setting out on their running journey to those striving to break three hours in the marathon, qualify for Good for Age places or take on their first ultra – and everything in between! She has a special interest in running form and has helped many runners learn to run better, reducing injuries and improving performance.

    As well as specific Running Weekends (dates are shown under "Running Camps") you can meet up with Sam and Jeff at one (or all) of the following opportunities.


    Our one-day and two-day running adventures (the latter include an overnight stay) give you the opportunity to run glorious trails in good company without worrying about getting lost or having to carry all your gear. They vary in distance and level of challenge – but one thing they all have in common is stunning scenery, be it coastal cliffs, ancient woodland or rolling countryside. We have vehicle support on hand, and break each day’s distance down into manageable chunks with scheduled stops for lunch, tea, cake or even a cheeky beer! From £45

    Our group long runs are designed to help runners build up their distance at the appropriate pace for them, with the support and guidance of fully qualified coaches. These runs are based on a set duration (90 minutes to 2hrs30), not distance, so stronger runners  go further and no one is pressured to 'keep up'. We hold our guided runs monthly in the countryside surrounding Rye, East Sussex and nearby historic and picturesque villages. We are lucky to be based in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with long-distance paths including the High Weald Landscape Trail, 1066 Walk and Saxon Shore Way on our doorstep and a wealth of scenic variety, from woodland to orchards, rolling hills to tranquil towpaths.  From £6

    We have been holding our running workshops since 2010 and have received fantastic feedback from participants about how much they’ve enjoyed attending and what they have gained as a result: be it a successful first marathon, a reduction in injuries or a shiny new PB. We currently offer three workshops - Run Better (focusing on running form/technique and injury prevention), Train + Race Better (performance focused) and Master Your Marathon. We constantly evolve what we teach, based on the latest scientific research and elite coaching practice as well as our own experience as runners and coaches. But while the information delivered in our workshops is grounded in science, it is pitched at runners, not scientists, using easy-to-understand terminology, plenty of real-life examples and the opportunity to put what you are learning into practice, with expert feedback.     Comments:  I had a great time in the Alps and North Devon with Sam and Jeff. I was so impressed with their coaching (and credentials) that I hired Jeff as my personal coach. It's going brilliantly well, I have now won my age group 10 times in a row and set 2 records.

    Comments:  I recently went on the Running Forever retreat in Camber Sands. Even though I am quite an experienced runner I was able to get so much out of the weekend, learning lots about strengthening and stretching (which I have definitely always been a slacker on) as well as lots more about the running side of things. There was no shortage of runs around the very scenic local countryside and beaches. Overall it was a super weekend of total running, relaxation and great hospitality. A big thanks to Sam, Jeff and Fiona.

    Comments:  Highly recommended. A friendly, very personable and well qualified team. They have vast experience and expertise in all aspects of running and associated fitness including dealing with injuries. I have hugely benefitted from the coaching, advice, training plans and attention to detail. Most importantly, time was taken to tailor and optimise for me, this is no cut and paste set up, each individual is demonstrably important. They go the extra mile.

    Comments:  I had been running for almost six years and my times were not getting any worse but not any better either. I had followed training plans off the internet and they were useful but somehow they didn’t feel they were working. I decided that if I really wanted to take my training seriously, I needed a coach. Having approached and spoken to a few I chose Sam. Not being local to me and unable to actually meet up seemed it might be a drawback but it wasn’t. After a long initial exploratory session on the phone my 14 week half marathon training plan emerged and was updated every week based on our emails, telephone conversations and sharing my Garmin data. I guess the proof of the pudding is in the eating and after my 14 week programme I ran the fastest half marathon for five years coming one minute within my personal best. Working with Sam took my training to a whole new level. She worked with me to design a schedule for running & rest days that fitted in with my other commitments whilst at the same time giving me some discipline and structure. Many of the workouts were completely new to me and so much better than what I'd been doing on my own. Best of all it was tailored to me and not someone else. She's great to work with - very knowledgeable about all things running & nutrition, plus very quick to respond to questions.

    Comments:  I recently travelled from the West Coast of Scotland to take part in a weekend running retreat with Running Forever. We were looked after from the minute we were picked up from the train station on Friday afternoon to the minute we were dropped off on Monday morning. The weekend was full of structured training runs and workshops on nutrition, recovery and a one-to-one session which helped me to fine-tune my marathon training plan. We ate the most delicious, nutritious and plentiful food, and were able to really focus on our own personal goals. I have come away re-energised, and can’t thank Sam and Jeff enough for sharing their knowledge and experience, and I look forward to joining them on another training retreat in the future. Definitely worth the journey from Scotland to East Sussex!

    Comments:  I recently joined one of Running Forever’s retreats in Rye and had the best weekend! The weekend was hosted by Sam and Jeff, 2 fantastic runners and coaches, along with their friend and fellow runner Fiona who provided the delicious food we ate. I was nervous the weekend could be too serious/intense but in reality the balance was perfect. I enjoyed every session (including a 1-1 coaching) and learnt loads to take away with me from technique, to strengthening, to how to build a good plan. On top of the great coaching and sessions the food was delicious and nutritious! We were so well taken care of and left feeling id work hard but also enjoyed a little luxury too! Can’t recommend enough

    Comments:  I would totally recommend the beginners’ course to anyone. It builds your fitness up bit by bit, in a way you don’t notice. Six months on, I’m running three times a week – not because I want to run fast or do marathons, purely because I want to be able to run at a moderate pace for an hour. My wife and daughter are both itching to do the course now!

    Comments:  I had mixed feelings about the beginners’ group, not least because I was afraid that, being one of the oldest (I’m in my mid-fifties), I would not be able to keep up. However, within very few weeks the coaches had managed to develop a team spirit and I began to look forward to the physical challenge, the social contact and laughter. I am astonished by how far and how fast I can now go without expiring.

    Comments:  When I signed up to the beginners’ course I was a complete novice with no running experience whatsoever. It gave me the confidence to start running regularly, helped by really knowledgeable and encouraging trainers. Rye Runners is a really inclusive and welcoming community, I would recommend it to runners of all abilities.

    Comments:  Having not run since my schooldays and never having been particularly keen on PE I was very nervous joining the group. At the first session I was made to feel at ease, which quickly dispelled any fears I had. The coaches were amazing – so supportive, positive and fun to be with. Each week my fitness improved and surprising myself, I started to enjoy the sessions. Not only did my fitness improve, but so did my self-belief that I could actually achieve much more than I ever dreamed I could
