Coach details

Sam Murphy

Well-known running coach and presenter. First class honours degree in Sport and Exercise Science, UK Athletics level 2 endurance coach and certified Vivobarefoot Barefoot Running coach with a special interest in running form and injury prevention.

Sam has a passion for running and all the ways in which it can change your life for the better. Her aim is to help as many people as possible create a lifelong running habit, be it for health, enjoyment, personal challenge or competitive success. To that end, she has coached everyone from beginners just setting out on their running journey to those striving to break three hours in the marathon or qualify for Good for Age places or take on their first ultra – and everything in between! She has a special interest in running form and has helped many runners learn to run better, reducing injuries and improving performance. Sam runs weekly coached groups in Kent and Sussex and is a tutor for England Athletics.

Sam has been a runner for almost three decades, completing dozens of races including 16 marathons (best time 3 hours 22 minutes), the Himalayan 100 Mile Race, the Highland Fling 53-mile Ultra and numerous triathlons. She enjoys the brief but intense effort of a 5K as much as the challenge of a hilly scenic trail race and believes variety is essential for both physical and mental freshness.

Sam is a journalist and author, writing about running and other fitness, health and sport topics for national newspapers and magazines including The Guardian, The Observer, Financial Times Weekend and Runner’s World. She is the author of the bestselling Run for Life: The Complete Guide for Every Female Runner as well as Marathon and Half Marathon: From Start to Finish and Running Well.

She is a regular media presenter on running and topical fitness matters, having appeared on BBC Breakfast, 5Live, Radio 4 and Radio London. She has also presented live to audiences at The Science Museum, The Running Show and the London Marathon’s Meet the Experts weekend.
Sam hosts Run Better and Master the Marathon workshops in East Sussex and, on demand, around the country.
